Frequently Asked Questions for Shipping Docks

Quick, practical answers to help warehouse supervisors manage pallet inventory and stay compliant with safety regulations.

How much are used wooden pallets worth?
Standard 48x40 GMA wooden pallets usually bring $3.00 to $5.50 each for clean Grade A pallets, and $1.50 to $3.25 for repaired Grade B pallets. If you have broken pallets, local recycling yards often pay $0.50 to $1.25 per core when you have at least 100 units, or haul them away for free to keep your dock tidy.
How many 48x40 pallets fit inside a standard 53-foot trailer?
When straight loaded side by side, a 53-foot trailer fits 24 floor stacks. Stacking pallets 18 to 19 units high gives you 432 to 456 pallets. By pinwheeling, meaning you turn alternating stacks sideways, you can fit 26 floor stacks for a total of up to 494 standard pallets.
Why does the fire code limit indoor pallet stacks to 6 feet?
National fire safety rules under NFPA 13 and International Fire Code Section 315.7 limit indoor idle wood pallet stacks to 6 feet, which is about 13 pallets high. Taller stacks create vertical draft chimneys that cause fires to spread very quickly. Stacks over 6 feet require specialized ceiling sprinklers or must be moved outside or loaded into an empty drop trailer.
